South Florida Mercury outboard owners who know which platform they have understand why “Mercury” is not a single service story. The three most distinct Mercury platforms active in South Florida have meaningfully different maintenance requirements.

Mercury Verado: The Supercharged Platform

The Verado is Mercury’s supercharged 4-stroke line (200 to 600 HP). The supercharger delivers power density that non-supercharged motors cannot match — and adds a service item that no other outboard on the market offers: supercharger oil service. Every 300 hours or 3 years: drain and replace the dedicated Verado supercharger lubricant. Cost: $400-$800. Ignoring this interval: supercharger wear, eventually supercharger replacement at $2,000-$4,000. Verado also runs at a higher operating temperature than standard FourStroke motors, making thermostat health a more critical monitoring item in South Florida heat.

Mercury OptiMax: Discontinued but Still Running

Mercury OptiMax (2004-2016 production) uses direct fuel injection on a 2-stroke platform — a uniquely powerful technology that delivers performance without the fuel-economy penalty of conventional carbureted 2-strokes. Still a large population in South Florida on older center consoles and offshore boats. OptiMax service profile: DFI injection oil in a dedicated reservoir (separate from crankcase), periodic direct injector cleaning, and power pack electrical diagnosis. CDS communicates with OptiMax ECM systems to read fault codes and perform injector tests. Parts availability remains good through Mercury and quality aftermarket suppliers.

Mercury ProXS: Performance FourStroke

ProXS is Mercury’s naturally aspirated performance 4-stroke. Higher-revving cam timing profile than standard FourStroke optimized for performance applications. ProXS service is closer to standard FourStroke than to Verado — oil changes, impeller, fuel system, standard intervals — but the higher-revving profile makes oil quality and change intervals more critical. CDS monitors ProXS engine parameters at the same level as other Mercury 4-stroke platforms.
