Your outboard turns over. The starter sounds healthy, the battery is clearly doing its job, and the engine spins the way it always has. It just will not catch. For most boat owners in South Florida this happens on the one morning the weather is perfect and everybody else is already out on the water.
The good news is that a cranking engine has already ruled out a long list of expensive problems. If the engine had run hot before it stopped starting, read this on an engine that has run hot first, because the two faults are often the same fault. If the starter spins the flywheel, your battery, starter motor, solenoid and ignition switch are all doing something right. What you are missing is one of three things: fuel, spark, or compression.
Start With Fuel, Because It Is Usually Fuel
In Fort Lauderdale, fuel is the first suspect almost every time, and the reason is how people use their boats here. A boat that goes out every weekend burns through a tank before anything has a chance to go wrong. A boat that sits for five or six weeks between trips is a different machine entirely.
Modern pump gasoline contains ethanol, and ethanol pulls moisture out of humid air. Sitting in a vented tank through a South Florida summer, fuel absorbs water, separates, and turns into something your engine cannot burn. The engine cranks all day and never fires because what is reaching the cylinders is not really fuel anymore.
Before you assume the worst, check the obvious things in order. Is the tank actually full, or is the gauge lying to you? Is the fuel line connected and the primer bulb firm when you squeeze it? A bulb that stays soft means air is getting in somewhere, usually at a cracked line or a loose fitting. Is the tank vent open? A closed vent creates a vacuum that stops fuel flow entirely, and it is one of the most common no-start causes on boats that were put away in a hurry.
If the bulb firms up and the engine still will not catch, the fuel in the tank is the next question. Water in fuel is not something you can see through a hose.

Then Look at Spark
If fuel checks out, spark is next. Marine ignition components live in the worst environment anybody could design for them: salt, humidity, heat and vibration, all at once, all year.
Spark plugs foul. Plug wires crack and leak voltage to ground where you cannot see it. Coils fail intermittently, which is worse than failing outright, because the engine runs perfectly on Saturday and refuses to start on Sunday. Safety interlocks matter too. A lanyard kill switch that is not fully seated, or a shift lever that is not quite in neutral, will crank the engine happily and never let it fire. Both are worth checking before anything gets taken apart.
Compression Is the One You Hope It Is Not
If there is fuel and there is spark and the engine still will not start, compression becomes the question, and this is where a no-start stops being an inconvenience.
An engine that has lost compression on one or more cylinders has an internal problem: worn rings, a scored cylinder wall, a failed head gasket, or in the worst case a powerhead that overheated at some point and was never properly assessed. A compression test takes minutes and tells you plainly where you stand. It is the difference between a repair you schedule and a repair that decides whether the boat is worth keeping.
This is the point where guessing costs real money. Owners who keep throwing parts at a no-start without testing compression frequently spend more on plugs, coils, pumps and fuel system work than the diagnosis would have cost, and still end up with the same result.
The Seasonal Pattern Nobody Warns You About
There is a rhythm to no-start calls in Broward County and it follows the calendar closely.
The first wave comes in late autumn, when boats that were used hard through summer get put away for a few weeks and then wanted again for the holidays. Fuel that was fine in September has had eight weeks of heat and humidity to degrade. The second wave comes in spring, after the longest idle stretch of the year, and those are the harder ones, because a boat that has sat four or five months has usually developed a second problem on top of the fuel: a flat battery, a corroded connection, or a fuel line that went hard and cracked while nothing was moving through it.
If your boat is coming out of a long layup, assume fuel is stale until proven otherwise, and check the battery terminals before you turn the key at all. Cranking an engine on a marginal battery is how a simple no-start turns into a starter motor replacement.
What Actually Causes a No-Start on Outboards
An outboard that cranks but will not start is missing fuel, spark, or compression. In South Florida the most common cause is water and ethanol contamination in fuel that has sat for several weeks, followed by fouled plugs and failed ignition components. A compression test separates a fuel or ignition problem from an internal engine problem in under fifteen minutes.
Why This One Is Worth a Phone Call First
A no-start describes itself well. What the engine does when you turn the key, whether the primer bulb holds pressure, how long the boat has sat, whether it ran fine the last time out, and what the plugs look like if you have pulled one, together narrow the cause dramatically before anybody opens a toolbox.
One customer called us with exactly this problem, described the symptoms over the phone, and had us alongside the boat within ninety minutes with the likely parts already picked up on the way. That only worked because the description was good enough to shop from. A no-start is one of the few faults where a careful phone conversation genuinely shortens the repair.
What Not to Do
Do not keep cranking. Extended cranking floods the cylinders, fouls plugs that were fine, and drains a battery you are going to need.
Do not add starting fluid. On a marine two stroke it can wash the oil off cylinder walls, and on a four stroke it can cause damage that costs vastly more than the original fault.
Do not assume the battery is the problem because the engine cranks slower after ten attempts. That is a symptom of the ten attempts, not the cause of the original no-start.
When to Call Someone Out
Call if the primer bulb will not firm up, if the engine has sat for more than a month, if you smell fuel where you should not, if the engine started and then quit and now will not restart, or if you have replaced plugs and it made no difference.
Those five situations all point at something a parts swap will not fix, and all five are faster to diagnose at the boat than to guess at from a parts counter.
